Lyrical
Wow! Just finished reading William Gibson's Pattern Recognition last night. Whitebait liked it a lot. While this bloggeur is a bit of a science fiction head he hadn't read anything of Gibson since the Burning Chrome stories when they first came out. And this novel is not sf but a thriller of sorts set in 2002. The four cities that feature loom large and are nicely deployed and described. The focus on the advertising industry and branding also make the narrative intriquing. Fraulein Dr Dr thinks the writing is a bit strained at times but Whitebait reckons that this tendency (very evident in Gibson's first stories) has been nicely bought under control here. In fact, Whitebait thinks that it is even OK to (sparingly) apply that much abused adjective 'lyrical' to many sentences in the book. And if he had the book in front of him he'd give you an example. Later.
